Music Makes the Best Distraction

I have been BFF's with any music making machine since I sprung forth from the womb. Windows Media Player, Itunes, Quickplayer, Flash, anything that played the sweet, succulent sound of guitars and drums coordinating in time with a synth. My body breaks into a cold sweat at the thought of a world without glorious beats. I always wondered how the deaf could go on not understanding the work of the Beatles, Mozart or Katy Perry...but as I grew older, I realized that music on its own is lovely, but there's more to songs than just the lyrics and sound.

My unemployment has been flourising splendidly under the recession's watchful eye and I've been able to expand my music tastes infinitely. Youtube has brought me such favorites as Yelle's "A Cause Des Garcons" and Verka Serduchka's "Danzig". When not trolling for fabulous Euro-pop like music, I harp back to a few favorites I've gathered in 2008.

When my editor at Collegenews.com posted a "Top Songs of 2008" contest on his Festival Crashers blog, I of course had to jump on the bandwagon and put my two sense in. It was a bit of a toughie. I wanted to throw out Katy Perry because, of course, she's been on the scene forever but I decided against it. Then we get to Estelle. I love her. I made "American Boy" my ringtone and shook my patoot to her fabulous song until it dang near fell off. I heard "Greenlight" by John Legend in a Forever 21 of all places, and since that was stuck in my head for two straight weeks it deserved a spot as well. I rounded it off with Ludo, but since the only people I know that enjoy them are probably waiting for next years Vans Warped Tour tickets, I probably should have kept "Love Me Dead" off the list.

Zack and co-blogger Andy chose Estelle and John Legend for their compilation, so I won myself a sweet pair of Chicbuds (what girl doesn't want a pair of earbuds with crystals on them?)

This top of the world feeling led me back to Jamsbio.com, a website dedicated to music memories, lists, and reviews. I hit my Music Writers quota today, so I officially became part of the site, writer wise. It's sweet when your musical prowess garners a little street cred.

I've never been pretentious about my music; I do listen to Britney Spears, Dream and occasionally Play. I happen to think that the Twilight Soundtrack isn't filled with complete crap. No matter how often I hear "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" I must get up and boogie. Sometimes I do get ragged on for my musical choices, but then again I'm not calling Weezer complete and total genius just because a bunch of kids in funny glasses and tight pants with two foot bongs told me to.

That's why I love Jamsbio. No one is pretentious on the site (I mean, there's a lotta play up on the Beatles and Hendrix, but with good cause) and I'm able to fully express why songs mean what they do to me without being judged harshly by epic music buffs. It keeps my unemployed self filled with things to do, and gives me an expressive way to do it without getting too wordy.

I'm going to do a little plug here and say "vote for my songs 'American Boy' and 'Greenlight' at Festivalcrashers.com" because a.) it's a pretty sweet blog for those of you really into your music festivals and b.) I love winning things...also my boss is pretty, uh, boss, so check it.
