On Saturday, the great gala of high school graduation parties was taking place. As the eldest and "most recently college graduated" of my siblings (as well as being female...don't ask why that's important but I guess it must be), I was asked (read: required) to attend all of the soirées. Not one to pass up free food and a glass of wine or two, my mother and I ambled up to various new acquaintances and each and every person I was introduced to gave me a job search tip, an email, or both.
It was at that moment that I realized I was doing what all adults in the employed world do: network.
Networking to me seemed like something one might do at a party, wherein being introduced to all sorts of interesting people via a hostess with the most-ess made for interesting small talk and a possible email exchange for a lunch date later on in the week (or maybe a quickie in the bathroom...it all depends on the gender and sexual orientation of said new acquaintance). While generally I separate all work related things from socially oriented things, they have knack of aligning with one another to mess up my perspective (and my inbox).
In the end I should probably accept that every person I know is going to offer me advice, a pat on the back/shoulder/head and tell me "you'll find a job soon".
If only my teeth didn't grind every time I heard that.
